Challenge

On March 23, 2022, the Taliban reversed their decision to open girls' schools and continued the ban on girls' education above grade 6 indefinitely. Millions of girls are now banned from schools and long to resume their education. SAHAR addressed this problem by starting underground schools for girls. However, our Stealth Sisters program was shut down by Taliban interference. In response, SAHAR has started the Secret Scholars Online program providing education in the safety of girls' homes.

Solution

Our Secret Scholars Online Program addresses vital skills for Afghan girls; including English, Math, Life Skills, and women's empowerment. These courses are conducted in secret via online platforms. The pilot for this new iteration of English courses began in August 2024 with 95 students enrolled for a 3-month test. The full program will serve over 300 students per year. Graduates of this program will have completed English through TOEFL prep and will be sponsored to complete the TOEFL exam.

Long-Term Impact

TOEFL certification allows students new avenues to explore including jobs, online courses, and scholarships from other countries. Additionally, the community built through this program will provide long-lasting support for girls and young women across Afghanistan inspiring them to make an impact in their communities.
