Africa has the world's youngest population and is highly vulnerable to climate change. Climate shocks disrupt education and deepen inequalities, while many schools lack resources to respond. Rwanda reflects both the challenge and opportunity: despite contributing little to global emissions, it is highly climate-vulnerable. With over a third of its population under 15, education can equip young people with the knowledge and skills to understand environmental challenges and take meaningful action.
Eco-Schools has helped young people turn learning into action. In Rwanda, FEE member ARCOS Network has engaged 75 schools, reached 65,000+ students, trained 1,602 teachers and engaged 38,000+ parents. Schools have established 40 Green Learning Zones and produced 85,000 tree seedlings, demonstrating how locally led environmental education creates real impact.
