In 2016, CCF Ubon Ratchathani organized training for 75 Youth Advocates from four schools on teen pregnancy prevention. These Youth Advocates play a major role in sharing their knowledge through different types of activities to children and youths in the area to promote a better understanding and to increase the awareness on safe sex. One of the activities that Youth Advocates were trained and that they have good skill to hold regular activity is “puppet theatre”.
In the past year, Youth Advocates have organized 11 shows of the puppet theatre. There were more than 650 people which comprises of children, teenagers and parents who attended these shows. These events not only increase the understanding on teen pregnancy prevention but also create fun and happiness to the community members. In addition, it is discovered that Youth Advocates have gained a better knowledge. It is also obvious that their attitudes have changed in a positive way.
Youth Advocates get together to plan for the event, select the script that would fit the target group, decide on casting for each of the characters and other planning as necessary. Youth Advocates are encouraged to choose their roles at their own preferences and strengths e.g. team leader, composer, player and narrator. Through this activity, Youth Advocates managed to learn key skills such as teamwork, planning skill, problem-solving skill and how to communicate effectively on sex topics.
Chonthicha, 14 years old, is one of the Youth Advocates. She shared her experience that “joining this activity not only allow her to gain a better knowledge on sex issues among teenagers but taking part in the puppet theatre helps her to become more confidence to express herself in public. She is proud of herself that she can contribute her knowledge to others. Puangpayom, Year 2 student, has completed Youth Advocates camp on teen pregnancy prevention since 2015. She helps guiding the younger group and advises them of different techniques in playing puppet theatre. She is always there during the rehearsal so their successors could carry on with the show. It is expected that the current Youth Advocates group will continue to chaperone the new Youth Advocates group as well.
This story is just one of the methods to promote youth to develop their leadership skill and to volunteer to share their knowledge to children and youth in their area.
