80 parents/guardians of children ages between 13-18 attended a seminar on ‘Positive and Creative Sex Education for Parents/Guardians’ on 24 November 2016, organized by CCF Loei*, with support from AIDS Network Development Foundation – Udon Thani. The session was aimed to educate parents and guardians about teen growth and development, along with effective ways to communicate with the children about sex issues.
Mrs A, a CCF mother, shared with the lecturers about her worries when seeing a pack of condom in her daughter’s bedroom. She said she got so upset and visualized many different possibilities in relating to her child’s sexual behavior. She questioned the girl about it, got the answer, she was in doubt still. Her daughter said she got the condom as free sample from a sex education class in school, nothing to worry about.
As a mother, Mrs A admitted it would be heartbreaking for her if her teen girl put herself into unwanted pregnancy and had to leave school because of that mistake. With her concern, our lecturers told her not to over-react and that she has to trust her daughter enough not to blame and get mad just because she saw the condom. The best way to deal with this situation is to calmly ask the girl, let her know her mother is here to help, not to accuse.
Since then, Mrs A has become a more understanding mother. She is now a good listener for her daughter. She supports and encourages the girl. She passed the invaluable knowledge received from the seminar to her husband. Her daughter is happy and appreciate the love and care her family gives to her. And this is one impressive result from the program we proudly share here.
