Learning Sex Education at “Shop Show Share” fair

CCF core youth leaders under the campaign “Youths Combat Teen Pregnancy” and the lead teachers from Payao participated in the knowledge sharing fair, Shop Show Share - Year 2, an event supported by CCF’s Payao Child Development Centre project and Payao Primary Educational Service Area Office 2. “Shop Show Share” is the event for school students to demonstrate and share their knowledge focusing on reproductive health and safe sex campaign. The event was designed to build network among student leaders, held on the 24th May 2016 at Payao Health Park, with over 200 students from 22 schools participated, along with over 100 public attendants.

The Payao youth leaders brought their work pieces on sex education to the fair and share the knowledge to their peers and public through variety of activities; exhibition booths, sex education learning stations, and health quiz show. Moreover, free educational printed materials were available for public, with interesting subjects such as “From Being Boys/Girls to Teens”, “Sex-related Talk Is Not Complicated”, etc. The event produced impressive result as we could see people all ages having a good time at the fair. They have gained more knowledge attending fun activities. We saw more confidence in asking questions about sexuality that would make them realize the importance of making wise decision as they will go through this path of life.

One of our Payao core youth leaders, Piyada, 15, Grade 9, said “The event gave me and my peers opportunity to exercise the knowledge we learnt from CCF training sessions and share to others. From the training, apart from learning about sex education, I have also gained more confidence in asking and answering questions about this topic. I understand now that sexuality is the common subject that applies to everyone in everyday life. It is especially beneficial to us as teenagers to know the right facts and understand how to look after ourselves. And that are good reasons why I want to share what I have learnt to the younger ones.”

“I’m happy to be the Giver.” said Jakkadoon, a grade 9, 15-year-old student who is also Payao youth leader who was one of the participants at the event. He proceeded, “I love learning new things and enjoy attending any activities. When the teacher asked me to join sex education-based activities, I was not quite sure at first. Learning about sex-related knowledge is something so close to everyone’s life but most of the time a taboo subject to talk about, and that causes misunderstanding in many ways. After attending the training, I would like to share what I’ve learnt to my peers so they can safely look after themselves.”

We would like to give thanks to all supporters for making CCF’s Youths Combat Teen Pregnancy program alive and beneficial to many; for the youths to have opportunity to display their learning-based creativity, to share the knowledges to others, to practise leadership and public speaking skills, and volunteer spirit. Our next step, we will bring together core youth leaders and teachers from 5 provinces (Ubol, Loei, Mukdaharn, Buriram, and Payao) and make serious action plans to organise sex education camps for more youth leaders so we can cover more areas for this useful campaign to apply.
