The Empower 40 BMUs, Restore Lake Turkana Ecosystem Project seeks to strengthen the capacity of Beach Management Units (BMUs) and promote sustainable fisheries in Turkana. The project will provide 2,000 Department of Fisheries-approved nets to support responsible fishing practices. Additionally, it will deliver training to all 40 BMUs on financial management, fish processing, marketing, environmental conservation, and fisheries legislation.
To enhance value addition and reduce post-harvest losses, the project will install five complete deep freezers for five BMUs. This intervention will improve fish storage and preservation, ensuring better quality products for markets. It will also enable fishers to expand market reach and increase household incomes.
Infrastructure development is a key component of the project, with the construction of three BMU stores/offices. These facilities will serve as administrative and coordination centers for BMU activities. Furthermore, four rescue boats will be provided to enhance safety and emergency response on Lake Turkana.
All project activities will be implemented once funding is secured. The interventions are designed to restore the Lake Turkana ecosystem, while empowering local BMUs to manage resources sustainably. Ultimately, the project will contribute to improved livelihoods, food security, and environmental conservation in the Turkana region.
