This project will provide 2000 Department of Fisheries-approved nets, and train the 40 BMUs on basic financial management skills, fish processing skills, marketing, environmental conservation techniques, and fisheries legislation governing fishing, and install 5 complete deep freezers for 5 BMUs. It will also build 3 BMU stores/offices and 4 rescue boats.
Lake Turkana is faced with multifaceted problems such as BMUs' lack of investment, lack of enforcement, training gaps, BMU-owned equipment being poorly serviced or unavailable, and untrained leadership. These BMUs challenges are coupled with Lake Turkana resource challenges which include climate change, disease outbreaks, overgrazing, overfishing, tree-cutting, community disputes, damming of river Omo upstream, and loss of biodiversity loss.
The project will support the 40 BMUs on Lake Turkana with the 2000 approved nets, and provide relevant training to 40 BMUs to be able to provide effective leadership to the institutions and manage the issues of the Lake resources. The BMUs will be provided with 5 installed deep freezers, build 3 stores, and procure for them 4 rescue boats.
The 40 BMUs will be trained and earn skills in institutions and lake resources management. 5 BMUs will have been provided with 5 installed deep freezers to prevent post-harvest losses and built 3 stores/offices that will be used for the storage of their fish and swift management of the BMUs. The BMUs will have been provided with 2000 right nets for them to practice legal fishing on the Lake and 4 rescue boats to prevent the loss of fishermen's lives in the lake.
