Save The Pastoralists Kenya (STP) works with 40 Beach Management Units (BMUs) around Lake Turkana to solve key challenges. These include a lack of investment, weak law enforcement, and poor training. Many BMUs also face issues with broken or missing equipment and untrained leaders.
Lake Turkana’s resources are under threat from climate change, disease outbreaks, overgrazing, and overfishing. Additional pressures include tree-cutting, community conflicts, and the damming of the Omo River upstream. These problems are causing a serious loss of biodiversity in the region.
STP plans to support the BMUs by distributing 2,000 approved fishing nets and offering leadership training. This training will help the BMUs manage lake resources better and address ongoing challenges. However, the project has not yet received any funding.
The plan also includes installing five deep freezers, building three storage facilities, and providing four rescue boats. These tools are vital for improving fish storage, safety, and emergency response. STP is seeking support to make this work possible.
