From November 2024 to February 2025, we organized two inspiring workshops with 14 young leaders and key community authorities, empowering them through a deeper understanding of their territory's dimensions, significance, and holistic value. Together, we explored the vital importance of the rainforest, wetlands, and ecological connectivity, emphasizing their role in safeguarding community life, health, and socio-environmental well-being. These discussions were essential for grasping the comprehensive value of their land, guiding responsible decision-making to protect it against pressing socio-economic threats. Throughout these sessions, participants engaged in thoughtful dialogue, examining the root causes and consequences of the pressing issues affecting their communities and region. They reflected on the risks and threats to their habitat, traditional livelihoods, and the local economy, fostering a shared sense of responsibility.
Equipped with this knowledge, the young leaders and community authorities became catalysts for positive change, implementing practical solutions to conserve and defend their territory. Two communities took a stand by agreeing to prohibit the sale of land for harmful palm oil projects and extensive cattle ranching. In another effort, two communities set internal regulations to prevent fires caused by slash-and-burn agriculture. One community organized a reforestation initiative, involving local children and educators in restoring vital water sources. Meanwhile, the youth rallied their regional authorities to take action against the invasion and deforestation of Laguna Lachua National Park. Witnessing these young individuals become guardians of Mother Nature and their heritage fills us with pride and hope.
In addition, the youth played a pivotal role in enhancing experimental planting spaces at Atz´umak Center. We developed and enriched 20 raised beds in the organic garden and expanded three areas dedicated to organic fertilizer production. These spaces will serve as hands-on training grounds, equipping young leaders with practical knowledge and skills to care for and restore the soil, while also implementing sustainable livelihoods in their communities.
We are deeply grateful for the invaluable support gathered through GlobalGiving, which empowers us to unite and uplift these extraordinary young Mayan leaders. Together, we strive to protect this vital and biodiverse tropical forest region, creating meaningful opportunities for them to live, work, and thrive in harmony with the gifts of their land and the rhythms of Mother Nature.
