This project will build the capacity of at least 30 Nigerian women on software development in Kano State, Nigeria. It will provide them with the necessary theoretical, practical and experience needed for a career in software development. Over $40,000 has already been secured in strategic tutoring both online and in-person, including internships and mentorships. An additional $10,000 is required to conduct the training.
The gender disparity in the tech industry is real and women are severely underrepresented in this field. Only 26% of all computing related jobs are held by women, and women make up on average just 22% of the total number of engineering and technology university graduates each year. This project will help to bridge the gap in the tech ecosystem across Nigeria and Africa. We will empower 30 women, providing them with an opportunity to have successful careers within the software engineering field.
eHealth Africa will do this through a 6 months program, running twice a year, that will be divided into 2 phases; with each phase having a duration of 3 months. Phase 1: Online and offline Academy. Phase 2: Internship. Upon completion of the program, all the women will have acquired the theoretical and practical skills and experience necessary to build a career in software development and may find employment with eHealth Africa, another company, or they could create their own tech startups.
The objective of the project is to build capacity in software development, especially around health systems, in collaboration with universities, state and private sectors. The program has trained approximately 100 young people to date. Many of them have already taken up permanent jobs in the tech sector.Through our program, we are empowering young Africans and building technical capacity among youths, providing them with a launching pad for growing their careers in this field.
