QUARTERLY REPORT ON TREE PLANTING in zombo.

ZOMBO DISTRICT

WESTNILE

TITLE:Planting Trees Today for a Greener and Resilient Tomorrow.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY.

Uganda is facing significant deforestation, with forest cover decreasing from 24% to 12.2% between 1990 and 2023. This decline is primarily driven by agriculture, urbanization, and population pressure. In response, we are collaborating with rural communities to promote government initiatives like the "Running Out of Trees (ROOTs)" campaign, which aims to restore 2.5 million hectares by 2030, targeting the planting of one tree per Ugandan annually.

Key efforts include:

- Community-based forestry initiatives

- Strengthening Central Forest Reserves (CFR) through community sensitization on environmental stewarship to help preserve and  restore ecological balance and provide a sustainable wood source

Planting trees today is a critical strategy for a sustainable future, directly combating climate change by sequestering carbon, reducing atmospheric CO2, and cooling urban environments. Trees play a vital role in restoring ecosystems, protecting biodiversity, improving air quality, and providing essential economic livelihoods. Immediate, coordinated action is essential for enhancing environmental resilience.

Key Benefits of Tree Planting (Today for Tomorrow)

Climate Change Mitigation: Trees serve as essential carbon sinks, with studies indicating that large-scale global tree planting could counterbalance a decade of human-induced emissions. A single mature tree can absorb approximately 48,484 pounds of CO2 annually.

Environmental Restoration: Trees play a crucial role in enhancing biodiversity by offering habitats for around 80% of terrestrial wildlife. They also contribute to restoring water cycles and preventing soil erosion.

Urban Cooling and Air Quality: Trees help lower temperatures in urban areas and filter pollutants, leading to healthier living environments.

Socio-Economic Impact: The act of planting trees benefits over 1.6 billion people worldwide, providing food, income, and resources.

Key Action Steps in the next quarter

Strategic planting is essential for promoting healthy root development. Dig holes roughly twice the size of the root ball and ensure the top is level with the soil surface.

Species selection plays a crucial role; using native species enhances local biodiversity and increases ecosystem resilience.

Community action is vital. Local, community-driven tree-planting initiatives are central to immediate environmental improvement.

Protection is key—simply planting is not enough; trees must be nurtured to maturity, which can take 5 to 50+ years depending on the species and that is what we do.

Sustainability must be a priority. Tree planting should be part of broader sustainable land-use practices, including combating deforestation and soil degradation.

SUCCESS STORY.

Success Story of Mr.Onega,a 53year old charcoal burner.

Mr. Onega, a 53-year-old charcoal burner, shares his transformative journey.

In the past, I lived without concern for tomorrow, focusing solely on immediate earnings from charcoal burning. This led me to cut down tall trees without planting replacements. However, a powerful storm brought heavy winds, hail, and flooding that devastated my community. Local bridges were washed away, transport connections to the main market were disrupted, crops were destroyed, and homes were damaged over two harrowing days.

A friend introduced me to a session on environmental conservation and ecosystem restoration by Hope Vineyard Foundation Uganda, which included a tree planting campaign. This experience opened my eyes to the significant impact my charcoal burning had on the recent disaster.

Now, I am committed to increasing my efforts and those of my household in planting trees and adopting eco-friendly practices that preserve biodiversity and protect our ecosystem.

"For a greener tomorrow, planting today ensures that forests, water, and energy interact to create a sustainable, cooler, and healthier planet".He concluded.
