In Langa, Cape Town's oldest township, children face overcrowded homes, poverty, and daily exposure to violence. Many slip through the cracks at school and lose safe spaces to simply be children. VUSA Rugby & Learning Academy changes that for 1,300 kids each year. Through sport (rugby), education, nutrition, and psycho-social care, we give them mentors, skills, and a safe landing. Children in Langa face daily barriers far beyond the classroom. Many grow up in overcrowded homes with absent parents, little food security, and constant exposure to poverty and violence. By Grade 4, when lessons switch from mother tongue to English, most fall behind and risk dropping out. Schools offer no structured or competitive sport, leaving children without safe outlets afterschool. Without support, too many lose confidence and hope, drawn into cycles of crime and unemployment.
VUSA provides children with safe spaces and structured programmes that extend beyond the classroom. Each year, over 1,300 children benefit from daily academic support in literacy, maths, and coding, helping them overcome the Grade 4 language barrier. Competitive rugby and structured sport build teamwork, discipline, and confidence, while art, music, and entrepreneurship open new possibilities. Nutritious meals and psychosocial care ensure every child is supported to grow, achieve, and thrive.
By strengthening academics, VUSA builds confidence, improving literacy, maths and digital literacy. Structured rugby teaches discipline, teamwork, and leadership. Daily meals and psychosocial care improve health and address trauma. The friendships and mentorships at VUSA give children the sense of belonging that gangs often exploit. With safe teams and caring coaches, they no longer look to the streets for identity. The result: resilient young people equipped to uplift their community.
