The COVID-19 pandemic has aggravated the effects of gender inequality. In impoverished communities, many families have lost their sources of income and their savings due to mandatory lockdown or the death of a loved one. Without a stable job, women may enter prostitution to earn money for their families, or be married off at a younger age because they are seen as a financial burden. This means women are more likely to take on exploitative work, where they may be underpaid or at risk of abuse.
With our partners around the world, we will provide 2100 women with vocational training and mentoring to set them up for careers in tourism, hospitality, nursing, and other industries. Many of the women we work with, from Guatemala to Kenya, do not have clear routes into a profession, even if they finish their formal education. By providing them with internships, professional skills, and guidance, your gift will empower women to access life-changing jobs and break through the cycle of poverty.
When women are able to pursue fairly-paid, safe employment, they gain the power to shape their future. With their own source of reliable income, women can achieve financial independence and make their own decisions, without relying on a spouse or their parents. This means they are at less risk of domestic abuse, sex trafficking, and/or exploitative work environments. As women gain agency, they can become leaders in their communities, inspire young girls, and contribute to a more equal society.
