Why donate to JUCONI?

JUCONI has 27 years of experience providing intensive educative-therapeutic attention to street-involved children, young people and their families in Puebla, Mexico. Over this period, JUCONI has established a strong track record in providing direct services, unique in their long-term success rates, helping these extremely marginalized children and young people to break intergenerational cycles of violence and reintegrate into their homes and into society. Annually, 350 street-involved children, youths and their families in the city of Puebla and surrounding areas directly benefit from the JUCONI program.

What´s the difference and why is our approach so successful?

The key to the success of JUCONI’s methodology in achieving long term results is that our services are personalized for each young person who comes in contact with us and that this personalized attention is integrated into the day to day community life of the Youth House. Each of the 19 Youth House residents has his own individual action plan responding to his specific needs. This plan addresses all aspects of their development: cognitive, emotional, physical and social, taking into account the day to day context of their life as individuals, members of a family, a school and a community.

All interventions in JUCONI begin with a focus on the individual strengths of each young person (a strengths-based approach)

This approach seeks to understand and develop the strengths and capabilities that can transform the lives of young people. We see these strengths as the starting points for change for each young person as they slowly build the foundations for their own empowerment and independence. A traditional approach with young people like our Youth House residents and the communities they live in has been to focus on their negative behaviors, on the person as the problem. Working with residents of the Youth House, JUCONI focuses on their potential for resilience, essential for navigating the challenges which all young people face on the road to becoming an adult. JUCONI sees the possibilities for each young person and what they can achieve despite the problems that they have been experiencing. We look with the young person at what they can do, not what they can´t. We see these young people as “having potential”, not just being “at risk”. We recognize their ability to recover from adversity. We see opportunities, hope and solutions, rather than problems and helplessness.

Update: The story of Francisco

In our last report (May 2016), we shared the story of Francisco, a 21 year old recently-graduated Youth House resident who had just successfully completed his three-year training program in partnership with a renowned automotive company here in Puebla. Francisco was recently selected as one of the candidates on the training program to receive a permanent contract with the company. This is a huge personal success for Francisco and his family but also for the JUCONI community as a whole. We believe that the ability to change is within us, it is our own story, just as Francisco´s story is his own. It is with his own confidence that Francisco is, with your help, building his own future. Every day, here at JUCONI, we´re working with all the Youth House residents to do the same. Not all the young men will take the same professional path as Francisco, but the foundations of their individual transformations are identical. We hope to see them all on their own journeys to independence, self-sufficiency and overall a happy life.

With every $10 USD that you invest in the Youth House Program JUCONI’s social return on investment (SROI) is x10 (or $100). This has been independently verified by international consulting firm AT Kearney, who conducted an evaluation that measures JUCONI’s impact in the long-term.
