Summary

In Uganda, the deaf are commonly referred to as "Kasiru", to mean stupid or foolish. The deaf simply have no rights, they cannot apply for jobs, parents are reluctant to take them to schools, and it is often seen as a waste of time and resources. This project seeks to empower the deaf with hands on skills like Tailoring, Art and Craft among others so that they can earn a living and live a dignified life. we strongly believe in the notion that disability is not inability.

Challenge

The existing facilities and institutions cannot fully address the plight of the deaf people in Uganda. The July 31st 2019 report as per National Bureau for NGOs Uganda indicates there are over 3810 (NGOs) with valid working permits, only 25 seek to address the concerns of disabled persons in Uganda with only 5 focusing on the deaf people who are over 260,000. WHO Updated list of September 2023 puts the figure at about 1,290,000 Deaf Ugandans. This project seeks to close such existing gaps.

Solution

The project in the short run will address unemployment of the deaf people through skilling and making them self-reliant while in the long run it will give them value, dignity and respect in the different communities they reside in. Our hope and prayer is create a better conducive world for the disabled though the deaf community we serve.

Long-Term Impact

The project seeks to addressing United Nations Sustainable Development Goals of No Poverty, Erase Hunger, Provide Quality Education, Gender Equality, Create decent work and Economic growth, Reduce inequality, Guarantee peace, justice and strong institutions which can be accomplished by bringing together all respective governments, businesses, media, institutions of higher learning and local NGOs to improve the lives of the Deaf people in their community by the year 2030.
