Empower 1,200 Ugandan women to start businesses

In 2025 Street Business School set an ambitious goal of training 1,200 Ugandan women to become entrepeneurs and start their own micro-businesses. In total, we achieved our goal and graduated 1,578 from our program!

As of June 30, 2026, SBS has reached over 107,000 women around the world, impacting the lives of an estimated 500,000 people (based on a birth-rate of 4-5 children per woman in East Africa).

Across all of our programs, graduates increase their income 2x on average, building more financially secure lives for themselves and their families.

The impacts go far beyond earnings: SBS graduates also experience increased confidence, growing from 50% to 80% of graduates feeling very confident in their ability to be breadwinners for their families. Graduates also learn how to manage their finances, with the number of individuals reporting having some savings increasing from 70% to more than 90% by the end of the program.

Peace's story reminds us that every one of those 107,000 people is a person whose life has changed for the better:

At 23, Peace was a determined mother of two, selling mandazi, pancakes, and silver fish to help her family survive. But despite her hard work, her small ventures were not moving her forward.

“I was selling some small items, but just to pass time,” she said. “I wasn’t taking it very seriously.”

That changed when Peace joined Street Business School. Inspired by the coaches and the stories of other women who had succeeded, she attended every session. 

“I had been managing small ventures without seeing results, so I knew this training would help me,” she said.

Through SBS, Peace learned how to manage money, care for customers, find creative sources of capital, and start small. She soon put those lessons into action by launching a porridge business—with no money and only a stove of her own. She borrowed a saucepan, sugar, flour, and cups from a neighbor and began serving her community. 

Today, Peace earns approximately $3.60 in profit each day. She pays school fees for her son and sister and contributes weekly to four savings groups—something she had never been able to do before.

“We didn’t know about business skills like budgeting, but now I can maintain a business and even save,” she said.

Peace’s transformation has spread beyond her own family. She has already shared what she learned with three other women, helping them start businesses of their own.

Now she dreams of buying land and opening a restaurant in Buliisa.

Street Business School gave Peace more than business knowledge. It helped her recognize the resources, determination, and potential she already possessed. By starting with almost nothing, she has created income, opportunity, and hope—for herself, her children, and her community.
