For years, the arrival of a monthly period meant fear, shame, and missed school days for hundreds of young girls in rural Kabarole District, Uganda. Without access to proper supplies or safe facilities, managing menstruation was a struggle that compromised their dignity and cut their education short.
Orutambu Uganda stepped in to change this reality through a three-pillar approach: breaking taboos with accurate sexual health information, teaching girls to make reusable sanitary towels from locally available materials, and constructing basic gender-sensitive school facilities. Emergency sanitary pads were also provided to support the most vulnerable girls.
The impact across the four beneficiary primary schools of Bishop Magambo, St. Paul Deviline, Mountainis of the Moon and Victors has been transformative.
Learning to make reusable pads equipped girls with a sustainable solution and sparked a renewed sense of confidence. As taboo gave way to understanding, self-esteem soared, and the fear of embarrassment vanished. Most remarkably, absenteeism due to menstruation has been completely eliminated. Girls now attend class consistently, actively participate, and show significant improvement in their academic performance.
"I no longer fear coming to school," shares one of the pupils. "I feel confident, clean, and ready to learn every single day."
This restored hope and academic growth would not have been possible without the generous financial support of our dedicated donors. Your belief in these girls has given them back their dignity, kept them in the classroom, and opened the door to a brighter future.
However, many more adolescent girls in neighboring rural communities still face these daily challenges alone. With your continued support, Orutambu Uganda can expand this vital initiative to reach more schools, restore more dignity, and ensure no girl ever drops out because of her period. Together, we can keep girls in school.
