Update on Employment Readiness Program (Jan - Nov 2014)

Background:

Since inception, Vidya Poshak has supported thousands of students to attain their dream of graduation. Most if not all the students that VP supports are from a rural background or are financially challenged. They do not have skills that would make them employable. In August 2013, we launched a program to help the graduating students to gain skills that would make them employable.  Since that time, more than 100 students who had attended the ERP camps and completed graduation in May 2014, have secured jobs in various companies. In 2014, the second edition of the program was launched with a target of 414 non-professional course students who will complete their graduation in 2015.

Activities so far:

We reached out to the students who had attended ERP camps in 2013 during Jan- Feb 2014 to assess their preparedness and to find out if they had any challenges with accessing our online tests. The primary issue that emerged was lack of access to internet for rural girls. We believe the solution is simply a tablet computer that can be used for reading PDFs, viewing educational ppts, listening to audio files etc. We are working on procuring tablets for as many needy students as possible in 2014-15.

In May 2014 nearly 400 students completed their graduation. We had gathered their academic details in ERP camps as well as later contact programs. We used this collated data to reach out to potential employers in Bangalore,  Shimoga and Hubli-Dharwad. There was an enthusiastic response and 6 companies came forward to conduct interviews in Dharwad for our students. We conducted a job fair from 1st June to 9th June 2014. During this time, more than 125 offers were released from these 6 companies for VP students. One of the multinational companies to recruit our people kept coming back for more. They visited thrice within one month to recruit more than 40 students.

For the Final Year students of 2014-15, we conducted 3 camps at Siddapur and Devarahubballi. Nearly 200 students attended these camps. Just like the last year, the students had different dreams but broadly securing a job was the priority of majority of the students followed by post-graduation and professional education such as CA, CS. The detailed breakup of choices of students is given below.

Methodology:

On the whole, we have retained the tried and proven methodology from previous ERP camps.  We did make some changes to delivery of the curriculum. This time, we encouraged the students to form groups at the camp and solve Aptitude related problems. Our expert resource personnel guided the students where they were finding difficulties. This aided self-learning in the students.

Update in 2014.

In June 2014, Vidya Poshak conducted “Placement Camps” at Daddikamalapur, Dharwad and Sirsi for our students. We had invited 6 prospective employers to the camp at Daddikamalapur. In fact one of the employers returned for more of our students and consequently we extended the camp by one day. A total of 120 offers were rolled out during the weeklong camp at Daddikamalapur. The next camp at Sirsi was opened to students of local colleges that were not supported by Vidya Poshak but we wanted to extend service to the community. Once again this camp turned out to be a resounding success.

For the students who are in final year in 2014-15, we have conducted a total of 5 ERP camps.
