Visiting ICCES with computer labs
The Turing Trust team visited several ICCES with computer labs (the photos below are of Ngleshie Amanfro ICCES, Akrofufu ICCES and of the students and teachers from Tetrefu ICT club). Other ICCES visited included Kedzi, Asafora, Assin Jakai and Afoako ICCES. Many of the ICCES are in very rural areas and we were certainly glad that we were travelling in a 4x4!
Visits to assess readiness to receive computers
Sogakope ICCES have a new facility under construction, but our discussions revealed that this had been delayed and so it was agreed to site the computer lab in the current premises, in a room that is on loan from the District Assembly.
Woe ICCES have recently been given new buildings vacated by a Junior High School that has moved to new premises. Both ICCES needed to complete some minor electrical works and purchase surge protectors and their computer labs will be set up as soon as this has been done.
So how can you possibly summarise such a packed visit? The welcome and hospitality wherever we visited was fantastic. There is no doubt that there is an appetite to use computers for improving education, but that there is plenty we still need to do. ICCES and their students continue to face significant financial challenges and some ICCES need support to provide permanent buildings for their computer labs. We need to continue to provide adequate training for all staff and to embed the use of computers and e-learning to support all areas of the curriculum. Whilst all schools we visited were very keen to be able to access the internet, the reality is that this is likely to be many years away, but by making effective use of RACHEL, we can at least give students access to a vast wealth of resources in the interim.
