Employability Programme for Youth in Slums

Unemployment is one of the major problems faced by youth in India. Saath noticed that there are many youngsters in Gujarat who have dropped out of schools to earn livelihood. But they don’t have enough skills, so to get the solution for this issue Saath started employability programs, not only in Gujarat but also in Rajasthan. 

Objectives of the Programme:

  1. To train disadvantaged youth, aged 18-30 years, between 180 - 300 hours and ensure they are placed and try to support of them in relevant jobs with assurance of minimum wages and opportunity for career advancement
  2. To introduce minimum three innovations that would directly impact retention, skill enhancement, and program sustainability

Introduction about Programs:

 The sector has been divided into formal and non-formal trainings:

  1. Formal training program: Udaan
  2. Informal training program: Nirman

 Udaan:

 Udaan program provides livelihood training to youth from vulnerable backgrounds and give them an equal opportunity to employability. The courses selected for the programs are also a result of market research and need assessment program from the community itself. The courses that are currently offered in this program are as follows:

  • Bed Side Patient Assistant (BSPA)
  • Beauty Parlour
  • Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES)
  • Computer Hardware
  • Retail Management
  • Tally
  • Career and Workplace Skills

The entire above mentioned program is for entry level jobs. Placement assistance is also provided to the trainees.

Nirman:

Nirman program addresses the training needs of people in the informal sector. Practical and theoretical training is provided which moulds their skills and capabilities to get better incomes. The courses that are currently offered in this program are as follows:

  • Plumbing
  • Electrician
  • Carpentry
  • Masonry
  • Mobile Repairing
  • Sew machine Repairing
  • Women Drivers

 We are also running women batches for electrician and masonry course. For informal trainings, SAATH has collaborated with Bosch India Foundation, American India Foundation and Shivia Micro finance as they both are well known for their qualitative and effective work. They use their expertise in providing opportunity to impart training about safety standards.

Success Story: Beauty Parlour Trade Success Story 

 Name: Krishna Mahnant (25 years), Ranjan Shah (28 years) and Mamta Prajapati (26 years)(Names changed)

Centre: Isanpur, Ahmedabad

Trade: Beauty Parlour      

 Krishna, Ranjan and Mamta all three are currently working at Housejoy as professional beauticians providing home services and earning Rs. 16,000, Rs. 13,000 and Rs. 21,000 per month respectively after completing their beauty parlour course at Isanpur Udaan centre.

All three girls are residing in Isanpur area where they came to know about Saath’s beauty parlour course through our field workers who were going door to door to market the programme. Mamta says, “I was already running a beauty parlour of my own but always wanted to learn more and hence joined the course. I learned a lot of new things during my training and got full support from staff during the training. Today I call myself a professional and it’s all because of them. Ranjan who was a housewive says, “I was interested in beauty parlour work and hence I joined the course” and at the same time Krishna adds, “I was already working at a jewellery shop but to support my family more I decided to join the training when I came to know about the course and hence joined the training which turned out to be wonderful”.

After the training all the 3 of them got placed at Housejoy, a home service providing company where they are currently working as beauticians. Their trainer Khyatiben says, “This has been the best batch for me till date. Including the 3 girls all the girls in the batch have been very enthusiastic and eager to learn and have learned very fast. Most of them are wives and mothers and are still managing their professional and personal life amazingly after getting the job.

Regarding their jobs the girls say they are getting full support from their husbands and families to continue their jobs and are very proud to be working professionals. Ranjan adds further, “I always used to wear sarees but here the dress code is tshirt and jeans which I wore for the first time in my life and now am quite comfortable in my office attire but it has been a big leap for me”. While Mamta closed her own parlour to focus on the job, Krishna still continues to work and goes to her job in the jewellery shop in the evening at 6 after finishing the current job. Asking if she gets tired, with a smile and proud feeling Krishna adds, “I’m not tired at all doing 2 jobs, I’m just really happy to be able to support my family and am working for our better future. I want to buy a new home for my family through my work”.

Their manager Srishti Raj Upadhyay says, “We have had very good experience with the girls placed from Saath. Initially we were a little hesitant to hire them as they were coming from NGO and we were worried about the quality of service provided by them. But all of our doubts have been cleared now. The girls have been excellent with Mamtaji being best, and all of them are managing their personal and professional lives very well. As the girls are going to clients homes we do arrange for transportation for them and send security with them as well as their safety is our major concern. Our experience with Saath’s trainees has been wonderful and we keep on asking Khyatiben to send as many more girls as possible and we will definitely accommodate them. We can also take Khyatiben if she wants to join us”. Laughing to this Khyatiben replies, “I’m very happy with my current job at Saath and don’t plan to move any time soon”.

Regarding their training at Saath all the 3 of them add, “Saath is running a very good project. The training is provided at a nominal fee which is the best part as people from vulnerable families also get a chance to undergo the training and then start earning for their families”.

 Innovations of the program:

 

  • Index for trainees has developed to measure the real life impact of the trainings on trainees as an individual and a group. It shows the success of the program. The Index serves as a complete monitoring tool.

 

  • New trades has been introduced like painting, mobile repairing, sew machine repairing

 

  • Special Women batches have been started in non-traditional trade like electrician, masonry, sew machine repairing, women driving.

 

  • Career counselling is provided to the participants of the programs.

 

  • Financial literacy and safety training is provided to the participants.

 

  • “Saath Service Point” Mobile application has been developed to serve as a database for the clients who are in need of services like: Masonry, Plumbing, Electrician, and Carpentry.
