Summary

This project is in support of craft artists affected by the mid-April Super Typhoon Sinlaku and the flooding that affected Guam, Tinian, and Saipan earlier this spring. The storm's high winds and heavy rain resulted in property damage, downed power lines, and severe flooding that destroyed craft artists' studios, homes, and their necessary tools and supplies for their creative practice. While immediate headlines have faded, the work of rebuilding creative livelihoods is still very active.

Challenge

Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands have been severely affected by the mid-April Super Typhoon Sinlaku that presented high winds and heavy rain, resulting in property damage, downed power lines, and severe flooding. CERF+ has received a significant amount of emergency relief requests for support and, as of June 1st, has provided over $87,000 to 29 craft artists with emergency relief funding support -- but the requests continue to come in and grow as the long-term recovery process begins.

Solution

Support for this project will provide much-needed emergency relief funding and resources to craft artists affected by the effects of Super Typhoon Sinlaku. Because of this Super Typhoon, many craft artists have lost their source of income from their creative practice and have experienced the loss of their studios, tools, and vital equipment for their livelihood.

Long-Term Impact

As applications continue to arrive, it is clear that the need for support remains active and will extend well beyond the immediate aftermath of the effects of this historic storm. CERF+ remains committed to supporting artists' ongoing needs across Guam and the Northern Mariana Islands as recovery progresses.
