Earthquake Impacts Teach For Nepal and Its placement communities
The earthquake has severely impacted Teach For Nepal placement communities in Sindhupalchowk and Lalitpur districts. Sindhupalchowk district is one of the hardest hit districts with the highest deaths reported. One of the Teach For Nepal Fellows perished in the quake in the district and another one sustained injury. Our Fellows who work and live in the rural areas across these two districts witnessed the havoc created by the earthquake and were directly impacted by the destruction of their homestay homes in the villages and loss of lives and property of their students, colleagues, and people they deeply cared about in their placement villages. They reported that over 90% of the houses in their communities had been destroyed or damaged. Immediately after the quake, TFN Fellows were one of the very few reaching out to support their community members in spite of personal loss that they sustained.
Immediate Relief: “Reach To Relief” Campaign
Given that Teach For Nepal Fellows live and work with the members of community, who have been impacted by the earthquake, Teach For Nepal launched relief efforts to support the communities where we place our Fellows in. Twenty Six Schools in two districts as a base on operation, Teach For Nepal’s relief campaign reached to over 30,000 people in 6,446 households with essential supplies of food, shelter, sanitation and medical support.
Relief Distribution Approach:
Because Teach For Nepal Fellows live and work in the communities, Teach For Nepal did initial assessment of the needs for supplies through the Fellows. Once the need were identified, we sought to find resources required either through in-kind sources or purchased through private sector suppliers. Leveraging on strong brand recognition and existing partnership TFN was able to mobilize larger quantity of in-kind resources. When in-kind donations weren’t possible, the partnership with private sector resulted in significant reduction in prices for high quality food items.
The supplies, once secured, were either brought to Teach For Nepal’s storage facility in Kupondole, Kathmandu or sent directly to communities. For each community, Fellows working in the community led the relief missions.
At each community Fellow then worked with school Principals, teachers and members of community to ensure distributions of the resources.
Please review attached document for the detail of distribution items.
