Following heavy rainfall across eastern Africa, floods are devastating communities and spreading disease. Hundreds of thousands of people are faced with flooded homes, damaged roads, inaccessible settlements, dead livestock, ruined crops, lack of food and contaminated water sources. We are working with communities in Ethiopia and Kenya at this critical time to ensure that families can access vital supplies and health workers can reach those in need.

Following years of drought, communities in Ethiopia and Kenya are now experiencing devastating floods caused by heavy rainfall. Health Poverty Action works in the most severely affected regions. Flash floods have caused landslides and submerged homes, clinics, schools, roads, bridges and fields. Waterborne diseases like cholera are spreading. Over a million people are affected, with hundreds of thousands displaced from their homes and over 100 people already confirmed to have died.

The survival of the most vulnerable groups - children, pregnant women, the elderly - is threatened by disease outbreaks, lack of essential supplies and damaged infrastructure. It is essential to help communities stay safe, access essential supplies and benefit from healthcare. HPA will support affected communities with immediate relief and long-term work to strengthen health systems, manage disease outbreaks, ensure food security, restore livelihoods, and improve access to water and sanitation.

Long-Term Impact

Health Poverty Action has been working with communities in the region since 2005. We work on long-term programmes to build resources, knowledge and skills that enable people to improve their own health, access effective health services, and develop their livelihoods. Through our response to this emergency we will meet both the short and long-term needs of the affected communities, ensuring they can recover from this disaster and start to rebuild their futures.
