The medical equipment Peace Winds provided in Ukraine is supporting a variety of health procedures

Many hospitals in Chernihiv Oblast in northern Ukraine had been unable to conduct some medical examinations due to attacks by Russian forces since the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Peace Winds started a project to provide the Oblast’s Regional Hospital and the Children’s Hospital with CT scanners and the Psychoneurological Hospital with a gas-chromatography in February 2023. Now all the equipment has been installed and in operation.

The CT scanners that Peace Winds provided are “64-row multi-slice CT” which obtain 64 images in one turn of the machine enabling detailed data collection in a very short period of time. That eased the burden for children and elderly who find it difficult to hold breath for a long time to be scanned. With old scanners, those who cannot hold breath had to repeat the process. Now, at the Regional Hospital, about 300 patients go through the CT scanner. One of the doctors at the hospital said, “This new scanner has various examination functions that the old scanners did not. Now we are able to detect abnormalities which we might have missed with the old machine.” We hope the installation of this new CT scanner further enhances the quality of medical services at the hospital.

The two CTs were delivered to the hospitals in June last year, but it took some time for the two hospitals to prepare proper rooms for the scanners because they handle radioactive materials and receive official permissions to operate. Sometimes we fell behind the schedule with logistical problems or power outages. We completed the process in May this year at the Regional Hospital and in September at the Children’s Hospital and the two scanners are now fully utilized to examine the patients.

The gas-chromatography Peace Winds provided to the Psychoneurological Hospital started its operation in October last year, a month after it was delivered to the hospital. This hospital acts as the examiner of alcohol and narcotics in the blood, for the police, government and other hospitals, since it owned the only gas-chromatography in the Oblast. The results of the tests are utilized in both clinical and forensic medical fields by being used to diagnose alcoholism or proof of drunk driving and so on.

One laboratory technician describes the merits of the new machine as, “With this new gas-chromatography, we are now able to conduct twice as many tests as we did before the Russian invasion. Analysis accuracy is higher. And it takes less time to analyse the density of narcotics in the blood, which we did manually before.”

The Russian forces continue to target hospitals depriving the Ukrainian people of opportunities to receive necessary medical care. Peace Winds continues to provide support for the people of Ukraine who are affected by the invasion. We appreciate your continuous support.
