The coronavirus pandemic has caused extreme supply disruptions throughout Haiti. Border restrictions have severely cut the number of shipping containers entering the country at a time when emergency provisions, medication, and medical supplies are needed most.
Konbit Sante is stepping into the breach in an attempt to help our healthcare partners in North Haiti educate their communities about COVID-19 prevention and diagnosis while continuing to provide basic health care to residents. We have partnered with the Haiti Ministry of Health and other non-government organizations (NGOs) to distribute supplies in a quick and efficient manner that observes COVID-19 safety precautions.
Essential medicines and supplies for newborns are part of that supply distribution. We cannot afford to let our attention lapse on this matter, for it literally means the difference between life and death for newborns who are born moderately premature or have other life-threatening illnesses. Preventing ruptures of essential medicines and supplies costs about $15,000 annually, and we just hitting the half-year mark.
There is a traditional Creole saying: Piti piti zwazo fé nich li. (Little by little, the bird makes it nest.) Individually, we can make a small difference. Together, we can make a big one.
