Summary

Busuma Refugee Camp, hosting 70,000 new arrivals from Congo, lacks adequate latrines, causing cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery, with 8-12 deaths daily. This project will build safe, hygienic latrines and toilets across the camp, improving sanitation and preventing disease. Donors' support will save lives, protect vulnerable children and the elderly, reduce outbreaks, and restore dignity through sustainable hygiene infrastructure

Challenge

Refugees in Busuma Camp face a severe sanitation crisis due to the lack of adequate latrines and toilets. Over 70,000 people share very few and unsafe facilities, forcing open defecation and poor hygiene practices. As a result, deadly diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery are spreading rapidly, causing preventable deaths every day, especially among children and the elderly.

Solution

The project will construct adequate, safe, and gender-separated latrines and toilets throughout Busuma Refugee Camp. This will reduce open defecation, improve hygiene practices, and limit contamination of water and living areas. By increasing access to proper sanitation, the project will prevent the spread of cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery, reduce daily deaths, and restore health, safety, and dignity for refugees.

Long-Term Impact

The construction of adequate latrines will permanently reduce sanitation-related diseases such as cholera, diarrhea, and dysentery in Busuma Refugee Camp. Improved hygiene will protect children, women, and the elderly, lowering mortality and health costs. The project will create a cleaner living environment, strengthen public health, reduce environmental contamination, and improve the dignity, safety, and well-being of refugees over time
