Addressing issues of Refugee and IDP HRD at the UN

Advocating for refugee human rights defenders in the Democratic Republic of Congo

We are currently concerned about Internally Displaced Persons Human Rights Defenders and Refugee Human Rights Defenders who are highly stigmatized and not recognized.

Problems:

These two categories of Human Rights Defenders are facing death threats and other forms of harassments and intimidations when they stand up for the rights of IDPs and Refugees.

Activities

Letters for recognition: We have addressed two (letters) to the United Nations Human Rights Office and copied to some human rights organizations on the urgent need to include refugee and IDPs Human Rights Defenders in the whole protection approach.

Collecting information on threats they are facing

We have managed to get in contact with some and have provided necessary information on the risks they are going through during their daily activities. This information helps us to come up with an advocacy approach.

Managing security risks

We have exchanged with some on what they can do in order to reduce security risks, however the situation is too bad for those who are too vulnerable in IDP Camps.

Meetings

We have organized some meetings with those in Kinshasa aiming at proposing solutions to their problems, and their visibility.

Challenges

As per now most of refugee and IDP HRDs are not yet supported yet they are in a very difficult situation,

This project aiming at supporting their resilience has not mobilized yet enough funds in order to help them. We still count on you please.
