Ukraine Global Scholars helps talented Ukrainian students from modest backgrounds gain admission to the world's best boarding schools and colleges on full scholarships. In return, they commit to coming back to Ukraine for at least five years. The war brings sudden costs that their families cannot cover. The UGS Emergency Fund gives fast grants for urgent travel, temporary housing, mental health, and medical needs, so no student loses a scholarship due to circumstances beyond their control.
Full scholarships cover tuition, room and board, but not emergencies. The war has cost many families their income, homes, or loved ones. One medical bill, an urgent trip home, or a housing gap can force a student to drop out. UGS supports 146 students and 75 applicants. Of the 43 currently in Ukraine, about 44% live in frontline or high-conflict areas and 74% in zones of elevated or high risk. The families of our students abroad also remain in these areas.
The fund provides UGS students with small, fast grants for urgent costs they and their families cannot cover, such as mental health counseling, an emergency round-trip ticket, temporary accommodation, food, or document fees. Students submit a request to the UGS team. We review it quickly and wire the grant directly to the student or their family. UGS staff and mentors stay in touch with each student after the grant and support them until their return to Ukraine and their first job.
With $20,000, the fund can help more than 30 students stay in school during a crisis. They will graduate from top schools and universities with global networks and the confidence to lead, and return to rebuild Ukraine. Since 2015, UGS has supported 400+ students, secured 500+ placements at schools such as Andover, Harvard, Yale, and Princeton, and helped win $100M+ in scholarships. Over 20 alumni now work in Ukraine, at the Ministry of Defense, Horizon Capital, and organizations they co-founded.
