For many families in Karamoja, the 2026 agricultural season has brought devastating consequences.
Severe and below-average rainfall has contributed to widespread crop failure across vulnerable communities. Families that would normally depend on their own harvests are increasingly forced to purchase food from markets.
But when food prices rise while household incomes remain extremely limited, families are left with an impossible choice: buy food, reduce meals, or go without.
The consequences are now visible in the latest food-security figures. Approximately 673,000 people in Karamoja are facing high levels of acute food insecurity, with about 118,000 experiencing Emergency-level conditions.
The nutritional consequences are particularly severe. Kotido and Kaabong are now classified as IPC Acute Malnutrition Phase 4 (Critical). More than 154,200 young children and approximately 13,900 pregnant and breastfeeding women are affected or at risk of acute malnutrition.
This is why we are bringing Karamoja's story to GlobalGiving.
We want Uganda to know. We want Africa to know. We want the world to know what is happening in Karamoja.
Emergency food assistance is urgently needed, but the response must also look beyond today's meal. Families need seeds, agricultural support, livelihoods, water, nutrition services, and opportunities to rebuild their ability to feed themselves.
Karamoja is facing hunger today—but with collective action, we can help build a more food-secure tomorrow.
