The hunger situation in Karamoja has deteriorated dramatically during the 2026 lean season.
Current assessments indicate that 673,000 people are now facing IPC Phase 3 or higher food insecurity, representing approximately 42% of the region’s population. This is a significant increase from the earlier estimate of 473,000 people.
Most concerning is the number of people now experiencing Emergency conditions. Approximately 118,000 people have reached IPC Phase 4, meaning families are facing extreme difficulty accessing enough food.
Children are among those paying the highest price. More than 154,200 children under five years old, together with approximately 13,900 pregnant and breastfeeding women, are affected or at serious risk of acute malnutrition.
In Kotido and Kaabong, the acute malnutrition situation has reached Critical levels.
Behind these figures are mothers who cannot provide enough food for their children, families who have lost crops, and communities struggling with food prices that have risen beyond what many households can afford.
We are raising this report not simply to describe a crisis, but to make sure Africa hears about it.
Through GlobalGiving, we are calling on donors, humanitarian organizations, African communities, governments, businesses, and individuals around the world to stand with the people of Karamoja, Uganda, Africa.
Their hunger deserves attention. Their children deserve food. Their communities deserve hope.
