The hunger crisis in Karamoja is not simply a statistic—it is a daily struggle for families whose livelihoods have been devastated by harsh climatic conditions and declining agricultural production.
The latest IPC assessment shows that 473,000 people in Karamoja are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity, with 432,000 people in Crisis (IPC Phase 3) and approximately 41,000 people in Emergency (IPC Phase 4). All nine districts are classified in Crisis, while Kaabong, Kotido, Karenga, Moroto and Nabilatuk are among the areas experiencing the most severe conditions.
For a family with no savings, no reliable harvest and no alternative source of income, a failed agricultural season can quickly become a life-threatening emergency.
Children are particularly vulnerable. Hunger affects more than the next meal—it can undermine children's growth, health, learning and future opportunities. The IPC estimates that 122,100 children aged 6–59 months may face acute malnutrition during the March 2026–February 2027 period.
Our appeal is therefore simple: please help us reach families before hunger causes irreversible harm.
Through this project, donor support can contribute toward emergency food assistance for vulnerable households, nutritional support for children, and longer-term resilience activities such as drought-resilient agriculture, livelihood support and access to essential resources.
The situation requires both compassion and action. Emergency food relief has already started reaching some communities, but the needs extend across the entire region.
