Emergency Food & Nutrition for Karamoja Families

The Karamoja sub-region stands at the frontline of climate change in Uganda. Consecutive seasons of below-average rainfall, prolonged dry spells, rising temperatures, and increasingly unpredictable weather patterns have devastated agricultural production and livestock, the primary sources of food and income for most families.

Farmers have watched their sorghum, maize, millet, and bean crops wither before harvest, leaving households with little or no food reserves. Livestock, which traditionally provide income, nutrition, and resilience during difficult times, have also been affected by drought and declining pasture, pushing many families deeper into poverty.

As food production declines, market prices continue to rise, making even basic staples unaffordable for vulnerable households. Families are adopting negative coping mechanisms, including reducing the number of meals eaten each day, selling productive assets, withdrawing children from school, and migrating in search of survival.

Responding to this crisis requires both immediate humanitarian relief and long-term resilience building. Emergency food assistance must be combined with climate-smart agriculture, drought-resistant seeds, irrigation systems, water harvesting technologies, livelihood diversification, and community training to help families recover and withstand future climate shocks.

Investing today will not only save lives but also strengthen communities against future humanitarian emergencies.
