Relief Operation in Cox's Bazar
Relief Operation in Cox's Bazar

More than 5 million people were affected by flooding this year. It was one of the most severe flooding Bangladesh has seen in the recent years. It was a difficult time for Bangladesh. Though the water level has decreased but people sufferings are yet to come to an end. After the flooding in July, the North-Western part of Bangladesh was again hit by flood by the end of September. Thousands of people were again stranded. Currently the water level has decreased and people are returning home.

The flood took of more than 100 lives this year; thousands of hectares of crop land were destroyed pushing poor communities into deep poverty. Currently many national and international NGO are providing relief support for the affected communities alongside the Government.

Uttaran wants to thank everyone who have supported us to take an action for the flood affected communities. Uttaran have been working in disaster risk reduction and providing emergency lifesaving support since late 80’s. The organization since its inception has provided emergency lifesaving support for more than 2 million people.

This year Uttaran have provided relief support for the Rohingya refugees living in Bangladesh and the host communities. Along with food, household items and hygiene kits, Uttaran have repaired the houses and roads which were affected by the flooding. Uttaran even took the initiative distribute cattle meat among the Rohingya and the Host communities to share the joy of Eid.

Unfortunately Uttaran could not extend its support in the north western region of Bangladesh, but have supported our partners who have working in the flood affected areas. Uttaran believes that the support needs to be continued and long term rehabilitation project must be taken. Similarly we need to strengthen disaster preparedness actions. The extreme poor communities have lost every little thing they owned and they need to start everything from the scrap. Post disaster water borne diseases are spreading very fast and women and children are the worst affected. Uttaran thus calls for the global community to support the flood affected extreme poor communities in the North-Western region of Bangladesh.
