Emergency Flood Relief & Community Wellbeing Initiatives

1. Project Overview
The Family Wellbeing Centre (FWC) works to improve the wellbeing of children, families, and communities affected by natural disasters, economic stress, and social vulnerabilities in Sri Lanka. This project focuses on:
Emergency flood relief: Providing food, clean water, hygiene items, school supplies, and temporary shelter to affected families. Child wellbeing & education: Supporting primary schools and nursery students to resume learning and develop essential life skills. Psychosocial support: Building emotional resilience for children and caregivers after disasters. Community empowerment & prevention: Promoting safe behaviours, drug-free lifestyles, road safety, food safety, and women’s socio-economic empowerment.
2. Key Activities and Achievements
2.1 Emergency Relief & School Recovery
Conducted rapid assessments in Polonnaruwa, Puthur, and Thambala villages to identify urgent needs for children affected by floods.
Distributed school materials, hygiene kits, and essential household items to families.
Refurbished classrooms, painted walls, and decorated learning spaces to create safe, supportive environments for children returning to school.
Engaged local youth in post-flood cleanup and recovery efforts, fostering community ownership.
2.2 Early Childhood Development & Psychosocial Support
Nursery students participated in interactive wellbeing games, storytelling, and drawing activities to rebuild confidence and process post-disaster stress.
Teachers and caregivers received guidance on supporting children’s emotional wellbeing.
Programmes promoted cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development through play-based learning and age-appropriate life skills.
2.3 Awareness & Prevention Initiatives
Formed children’s clubs in Mannar District (35 girls, 46 boys) to act as peer advocates for drug-free living.
Delivered road safety sessions using games and demonstrations.
Conducted oral health and nutrition awareness sessions for preschool children.
Implemented baseline studies in Mannar, Trincomalee, and Polonnaruwa to assess needs and inform long-term programming.
2.4 Women’s Empowerment & Community Engagement
Conducted Social and Behaviour Change (SBC) workshops with self-help groups in Anuradhapura, building women’s confidence, decision-making, and collective action skills.
Facilitated training for local consumer societies on food safety, hygiene, and accountability.
Strengthened local capacity to advocate for safe practices and community wellbeing.
2.5 Psychosocial First Aid & Family Support
Provided Psychological First Aid (PFA) for children and caregivers affected by floods and displacement.
Assisted families with temporary school placement, essential household items, and income-generating support.
Focused on rebuilding emotional stability and reducing stress through structured, culturally responsive interventions.

4. Impact Highlights
Immediate relief enabled children to resume schooling with minimal interruption.
Psychosocial activities helped children process trauma and regain confidence after disasters.
Early prevention sessions strengthened knowledge of safe behaviours and healthy habits.
Community engagement empowered women and youth to act as change agents.
Participatory approaches laid the foundation for sustainable, community-led wellbeing initiatives.
5. Challenges
Continuous engagement is needed to ensure long-term behavioural change and recovery.
