Letters from Mothers to Expecting Babies

By MAYUMI YOSHIDA | Representative Director

JISP, in cooperation with a local NGO, International Blue Crescent Relief and Development Foundation (IBC), is running a Baby Friendly Space in the temporary container housing site in the Elbistan district of Kahramanmaras, called "MUSIAD Container Camp", in order to support the mothers with babies aged 0-24 months and pregnant mothers. We are conducting numerous activities, such as parenting counseling, psychosocial support at individuals and group level, awareness sessions, social activities and material support.

Today, we want to share a beautiful story that touched our hearts and reminded us of the incredible strength and love within the human spirit. Meet Gulbahar, a brave 29-year-old woman who has faced unimaginable challenges after losing her home by the devastating earthquake. Currently residing at the Deik Container Camp, she eagerly awaits the arrival of her precious baby.

During our activity for pregnant mothers, Gulbahar decided to write her very first letter to her unborn child, expressing the overwhelming emotions she feels and the deep love she holds in her heart. Despite the difficulties caused by the earthquakes, this little baby has become a source of strength and hope for her and her entire family.

She shared, "It's kind of weird, and at the same time, I feel very happy to write a letter to my expecting baby. This is the first time I have ever done something like this, and I truly enjoyed the process. The love I feel for my baby is immeasurable, and I consider myself incredibly fortunate to be part of this experience."
Gulbahar's touching letter was just one part of a heartwarming activity that took place, involving 12 mothers who joined together to write letters to their unborn babies. The atmosphere was filled with love, positivity, and a sense of relief from the stress caused by the pregnancy in the aftermath of the earthquakes. As part of our activity, women also painted stones, adding a personal touch to their heartfelt messages.

The impact of this activity went beyond the words written on paper. It served as a reminder of the resilience and determination that these incredible mothers possess. It showcased their unwavering love and their ability to find solace and joy even in the midst of challenging circumstances. Together, they formed a bond of support and understanding that will continue to uplift them during their journey as mothers.

We were inspired by Gulbahar and all the mothers who participated in this activity. Their strength, love, and resilience are a testament to the strong human spirit. We stand with them, offering support, love, and hope as they navigate this beautiful journey of motherhood.
