Zamfara State, Nigeria, is facing a deadly cholera outbreak in Bukkuyum and Gummi LGAs, with over 180+ reported cases and at least 7 fatalities in just a few days. Humanity and Community Development Foundation (HUCOMDEF) is launching an emergency response project to save lives through medical supplies, clean water, sanitation support, and community awareness. This project will directly benefit over 5,000 vulnerable rural residents-especially women and children at highest risk.
Zamfara State is facing a deadly cholera outbreak in Bukkuyum and Gummi LGAs, with over 180 cases and 7 deaths reported so far. The crisis is fueled by poor access to safe water, inadequate sanitation, and overstretched health facilities. Women and children in rural communities are most at risk. Without urgent action, the outbreak will spread further, causing preventable deaths and deepening public health challenges.
HUCOMDEF, with community leaders and health workers, will provide lifesaving treatment supplies (ORS, IV fluids, drugs), support and expand Cholera Treatment Centers, ensure safe water access through chlorination and purification, promote hygiene practices via sensitization campaigns, and strengthen surveillance systems to track and respond quickly to new cases.
This project will strengthen WASH infrastructure, train local health workers in outbreak preparedness, and promote community resilience. By addressing root causes and advocating for Oral Cholera Vaccination in high-risk areas, HUCOMDEF will help reduce future outbreaks, protect vulnerable populations, and build safer, healthier communities in Zamfara State.
