Emergency Aid Ukraine

The war in Ukraine has destroyed 
the livelihoods of many families. 
Fields are riddled with landmines, 
jobs have been lost, and entire 
villages have been depopulated. 
To help internally displaced 
persons, in particular, generate 
their own income again, the partner 
organization of Aktion Deutschland 
Hilft, TERRA TECH, is employing a 
specialized aid approach: beekeeping.

Start-up support for small-scale beekeeping operations

Together with its local partner, 
District #1, the organization is 
supporting a total of 76 households 
(approximately 300 people) in the 
southern regions of Kherson and 
Mykolaiv as they rebuild or expand 
small-scale beekeeping operations. 
Internally displaced persons, 
low-income families, and single 
mothers, in particular, are receiving 
bee colonies, hives, and 
honey-processing equipment such as 
honey extractors.

Trailers for transporting the hives are 
also included in the equipment provided. 
Mobility is crucial, especially near the 
front lines, as it allows hives to be 
moved relatively quickly to safer 
locations if a threat arises.

Reducing Dependence on Emergency Aid

“Many families lost everything in the war:
their homes, their jobs, and their livestock. 
Through our support, we aim to make people 
less dependent on emergency aid and enable 
them to earn a sustainable livelihood,”
says Project Manager at TERRA TECH.

Participation in the aid project requires 
some prior experience in beekeeping. Many 
of the families receiving support had kept 
bee colonies before the war but lost them 
along with their equipment due to shelling, 
displacement, or looting. They are now 
receiving the specific materials needed to 
resume honey production and sales.

The aid program deliberately focuses on 
tailored solutions. Not every family requires 
the same equipment; while some need new bee 
colonies, others primarily lack means of 
transport or processing tools. Therefore, 
needs are assessed in consultation with the 
families before assistance begins.

Enjoying, selling, or trading honey

“Beekeeping is particularly well-suited to 
this situation because it works even under 
difficult conditions. People can operate 
using a relatively small area and relocate 
if the fighting shifts,” explains Project 
Manager at TERRA TECH.

Beyond the economic aspect, the aid project 
also improves food security for the local 
population. The honey produced can be consumed 
by the families themselves, sold at markets, 
or bartered for other food items.

The beekeeping project gives many families the 
chance to look to the future again despite war 
and instability and to gradually build a new 
economic livelihood.
