Our Elm Court Center in downtown Portland serves and delivers more than 100,000 meals annually to older adults. Some come into thc center for meals while others, who are homebound, receive Meals on Wheels delivered by friendly volunteers who also take a few minutes to visit. Recent studies have shown that loneliness is as detrimental to one's health as smoking 15 cigarettes per day. Meals on Wheels People provides more than a meal by sending volunteers to visit with isolated, homebound elderly. We also provide a gathering place for seniors who live alone. Our Center is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and provides coffee, a lending library, puzzles and a variety fo exercise and other activities.
Between Oct. 1 and Dec. 31, 2019, we served and delivered 26,688 meals to nearly 800 older adults in downtown Portland. We received this note following our delivery on Thanksgiving Day: Thank you for arranging delivery of Thanksgiving dinner to me on Thursday. The food was delicious and included a placemat colored by a young child. So very sweet! I am so grateful for the kind people who prepare and deliver my meals. Those who come to my door are always so cheerful. God bless you!
