We have been experiencing severe hot weather in the Portland metro area this summer. Many of those we serve at the Elm Court Center in downtown Portland live in residence hotels or apartment buildings without air conditioning. After a number of days of continued hot weather, flats on upper floors can become stifiling. Our Elm Court Center not only provides daily nutritilous meals, but a place to escape from the heat. In partnership with Multnomah County, our Elm Court Center is open as a "cooling center" until 9 p.m. on days when the temperature is above 90 degrees. Older adults with nowhere else to go can come to the center to cool off, have a piece of watermelon or a cool drink and find some respite from the severe weather. We also provide donated electric fans to those who need them.
Between May 1 and July 27 of this year, the Elm Court Center served and delivered 21,995 meals to nearly 1,000 older adults in the downtown area for a total cost of $162,543.
One of our participants sent this note to us: Dear Friends, thank you for you many kindnesses, including the gift of a fan! It has made such a difference to me. God bless you! Alice
