The Galgal Day Care Center in Jerusalem and Someone to Run With in Tel Aviv, are projects of ELEM- Youth in Distress in Israel, provide support and assistance for homeless at-risk youth aged 18-26 with the aim of providing a basic humanitarian solution - food, hot showers, laundry, clothing and medical services. The project consists of two drop-in centers in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem in addition to two transitional apartments for rehabilitation in Tel Aviv. The drop-in centers operate during the evening hours, conducts regular outreach and contact with homeless youth, and provides personal mentoring including activities outside the center such as accompaniment to medical care, etc.
The last three months were filled with holiday celebrations and renovations. The project hosted a Purim party for the youth from the center as well as two Passover dinners at the Tel Aviv restaurants “Port Said” and “Brothers,” both generously donated by the restaurant owners. In conjunction with Wix, successful renovations of the roof and stairwell took place as part of the “good deeds” day. In addition the office was both renovated and organized.
In total 211 young adults attended the project and the transitional apartments, of which 23 were new youth. Recently, the project’s staff hosted an organization wide seminar for all ELEM workers in Tel Aviv. In addition, the staff toured the Levinsky Clinic and held a meeting to strengthen partnership.
