Dear Friends,
We are pleased to share an update on our project, Electrify Rural North Kivu with 20 kW Pico Hydro, an initiative designed to bring clean, reliable and sustainable electricity to isolated communities in Masisi Territory, North Kivu, Democratic Republic of Congo.
For thousands of families living in rural Masisi, access to electricity remains a daily challenge. Health centers struggle to provide services after dark, schools lack adequate lighting, small businesses cannot expand, and insecurity increases every night. Through this project, we aim to construct two 20 kW pico-hydroelectric plants that will harness local water resources to provide affordable renewable energy and improve the lives of entire communities.
Project Context
Masisi has endured years of conflict, displacement and underinvestment in essential infrastructure. Although the area possesses abundant natural water resources, many villages remain without electricity. This lack of energy continues to limit access to healthcare, education, agricultural productivity and economic opportunities.
Reliable electricity is not only a basic service—it is the foundation for safer communities, stronger local economies and sustainable development.
Project Goal
The project seeks to install two pico-hydroelectric plants with a combined capacity of 20 kW to provide clean and reliable electricity for rural communities in Masisi.
The project will contribute to:
Progress to Date
Although construction has not yet begun, important preparatory work is already underway.
With the US$154 generously donated by supporters, our team successfully carried out the identification and technical assessment of the future installation sites. These initial field activities are essential to ensure that the hydroelectric plants are built in locations offering the greatest technical feasibility and long-term community benefit.
At the same time, consultations with local authorities and community leaders have strengthened local ownership of the project.
We are currently finalizing the identification of technical trainers and future local operators who will participate in the implementation and management of the hydroelectric systems.
Construction is scheduled to begin in November 2025.
Use of Funds
Project Budget: US$25,000
Funds Raised: US$154
The first donations have been used to support preliminary field assessments, site identification and technical preparation activities that are necessary before construction can begin.
As additional funding becomes available, it will directly support construction materials, equipment procurement, installation, technical supervision, community training and commissioning of the two hydroelectric plants.
Expected Impact
Once completed, the project will provide lasting benefits to rural communities across Masisi.
Families will gain access to dependable electricity for the first time. Health facilities will be able to offer improved services day and night. Children will study in better conditions. Farmers and entrepreneurs will strengthen their livelihoods through improved productivity, while local businesses will have new opportunities to grow.
Beyond electricity, this project will restore hope, increase community resilience and contribute to sustainable local development.
Looking Ahead
The coming months will focus on completing technical preparations, mobilizing construction materials and launching the installation phase.
Our partnership with GlobalGiving offers an incredible opportunity to reach compassionate supporters around the world. We are confident that, together with our donors, we can raise the resources needed to fully implement this life-changing initiative.
Every contribution, regardless of its size, brings rural families one step closer to reliable electricity and a brighter future.
