Challenge

The children living on the streets of Mexico City have a lack of birth certificates, do not assist in schools, their health is deficient and they do not have any access to psychological and psychiatric treatment. "Chamany" is five years old, she has shown us how difficult it is to live with mild intellectual disabilities, decrease of language skills, problems with her short-term memory, attention deficit disorder and that her size and weight do not coincide with her chronological age.

Solution

Street workers of "El Caracol" facilitate the access to diagnosis and medical, psychologic and psychiatric treatment therefore that children will have better tools for accessing schools and a life outside the streets. Children like "Chamany" will receive specialized care, neural stimulation and psychological treatment for strengthening their brain maturation, improve the physical and mental health, and thereby generate new social abilities for a better future

Long-Term Impact

The Access to treatment of physical and mental health, permits that the children living in the streets, grow up with an adequate nutrition, without illnesses which put their lives at risk; generates a feeling of security, their brain maturation goes according to their chronological age and they can count on social abilities. Like that, they can access the equality of conditions and can count with the same opportunities for being a full citizen with a different life from that of their parents.
