From Learners to Leaders

By Manee Ngozi Nnamani | Project Leader

Over the past 15 years, Elara Study Centre has been committed to raising young women who are not only academically sound but also grounded in leadership, virtue, and service. Many of our girls have grown up through our programmes, and today, we are seeing the fruits of that long-term investment.

Three of our young womenOmowunmi Fadipe, Kamsi Nsolibe, and Moyin Adewole, who were trained and mentored at Elara, stepped into leadership roles this summer at Kamp Konnect, a regional holiday program for teenagers. For me, it was deeply moving to watch them serve. I have walked with them for years as a mentor, and now they, in turn, are giving back to others.

The Role They Played

At Kamp Konnect, the girls served as volunteers and mentors, responsible for:

  • Organising daily activities and cabin life.
  • Offering one-on-one mentoring to campers.
  • Leading seminars, talks, and classes tied to the camp’s theme,  Anchored in Hope.
  • Supporting campers in learning the value of friendships, teamwork, and responsibility.

Their work was not just about logistics. It was about character: patience, resilience, creativity, and empathy.

What They Learned

The reflections from these young leaders capture their growth:

“I struggled with trying to get the girls to be punctual, especially those in my cabin. I also struggled with getting them to work together. But mentoring taught me how to be more of a team player — to work more with others.”

“Working with a team of volunteers really taught me cooperation and team spirit, because whenever someone was down, others stood in their place, effectively covering up.”

“I learned how to manage and resolve conflicts between campers, which is very valuable.”

“I had been a camper twice, and this time I attended as a volunteer. It was very interesting to see the camp from a different point of view and how much is put into making the camp a huge success.”

These stories show that leadership is not just about titles; it is about the daily work of guiding, collaborating, and growing together.

Why This Matters

At Elara, we believe in the long view of formation: investing years in consistent mentoring, so that when the time comes, our girls step forward as leaders in their schools, communities, and beyond. Kamp Konnect showed us that the seeds planted years ago are beginning to bear fruit.

Thanks to your support, we are not only forming young women but building a cycle: today’s mentees become tomorrow’s mentors.
