Peru is currently threaten by the most heavy rains in the last two decades. The unusual heavy rains have caused the worst floods, landslide and overflowing rivers, causing deaths, massive destruction of houses, and an increasing risk for mosquito-related diseases. Care Peru's immediate response is to provide health and water kits to families in the severely affected areas in the north of the country. We have set a target to distribute 8,000 family health and water kits to impact 40,000 people.
Due to the phenomenon of El Nino, Peru is currently threaten by heavy rains across the coast. According to the Peruvian government, the unusual heavy rains have caused the worst floods, landslide and overflowing rivers in the last two decades. The forecast is that the rains will continue for 4 more weeks and the situation will definitely get worse. The flood waters are now becoming breeding grounds for mosquitoes that carry Dengue, Zika and other vectors.
CARE Peru already has teams in the region of Piura and adjacent regions working in Zika prevention. Today, these teams are in the best position to take the aid quickly and effectively. Care Peru's immediate humanitarian response is to provide health and water kits to families in the severely affected areas in the north of the country. We are starting in the department of Piura that has over 250,000 people affected by the floods. We are also taking action to prevent Zika and other diseases.
We have set a target to raise $600,000 to put together and distribute 8,000 family health and water kits to impact a total of 40,000 people. These kits have a cost of U$ 75 per Kit, and they include a large 50-liter plastic container with a lid , a 20-liter bucket with lid a spigot, water disinfecting tablets, diapers, towels, soap, toothpaste, hygienic towels, mosquito nets, repellents and few other things.
