Through the project "Basketball: A Space for Women", during the months of March to May 2026, we provided girls', adolescents', and young women's basketball teams in the Indigenous municipality of Chenalhó with tools and safe sports spaces that continue to strengthen their physical well-being, leadership, teamwork, and sense of solidarity.
This comprehensive intervention contributed to transforming community dynamics by positioning young women as active agents of their own development. Through basketball, participants strengthened their self-confidence, challenged traditional gender norms, and demonstrated their ability to lead both on and off the court.

Sports Gathering: Recognizing My Emotions
Location: Technical Secondary School No. 48, San Pedro Chenalhó
In Chenalhó, the sports gathering was directly linked to the promotion of healthy lifestyles and mental well-being. Activities were intentionally designed to strengthen adolescent girls’ autonomy while fostering a deeper understanding of body care, emotional awareness, and the free expression of feelings.
By ensuring a women-only environment, the activity created a safe and supportive space where participants felt comfortable sharing their experiences without fear of judgment, ridicule, or discrimination. This atmosphere encouraged active participation, strengthened peer support, and fostered a stronger sense of community among the participants.
Throughout the gathering, young women reflected on how basketball and socio-emotional well-being can become powerful collective tools for resisting gender inequalities and promoting personal growth.
Observed Impact
Adoption of Healthy Habits
Participants demonstrated increased enthusiasm and commitment toward physical activity, regularly engaging in sports practices and healthy lifestyle routines.
Strengthened Mental Well-Being
The gathering provided opportunities for collective reflection, allowing participants to share emotions, recognize the importance of self-care, and develop strategies to support their emotional health.
Community Building
The activity strengthened social cohesion, empathy, and mutual support networks among girls and young women from the municipality, fostering stronger relationships and a sense of belonging.
