Our EdStartup work includes all EdVillage’s work with edupreneurs (“education entrepreneurs”) who demonstrate strong potential to open high performing, free or low fee schools or start high quality education programs in disadvantaged communities. EdVillage’s services include mentoring, technical assistance, and coaching from the design phase to launch and through the crucial first years of a new school or program’s existence. Our goal is to increase the supply of high quality schools and educational programs available to the most disadvantaged children in South Africa.
This led EdVillage to mentor and support Ms. Melanie Smuts, a South African edupreneur with a law and social justice background who founded Streetlight Schools in October 2013. Streetlight Schools’ launched, an after-school program and educational laboratory as a pilot study. The Learning Centre is located in a part of downtown Johannesburg called Jeppestown. Using lessons learned from the Learning Centre, Streetlight Schools aims to create a new network of high-performing, low fee schools.
In 2016, Melanie plans to open her first school. You can learn more about Streetlight Schools and the Learning Centre and how you might support them at: www.streetlightschools.org.
EdVillage is excited about our work with Streetlight Schools. In 2014, we plan to identify additional edupreneurs that are interested in making a similar impact on the quality of educational programs available to low-income children in South Africa. We will update this page as we bring on emerging eduprenuers! Stay tuned for more updates.
Thank you for your interest and support.
