Summary

Access to full education in rural Latin America is difficult for the majority due to the costs of basic classroom materials for primary school and secondary school and college expenses. Many schools are severely underfunded with a lack of resources and not enough teachers leading many rural students to drop out. We aim to facilitate this access by providing classroom materials, scholarships, local teachers, basic food programmes and sustainable family income plans to secure future education.

Challenge

With many rural primary schools in Guatemala, Ecuador and Peru only having one or two teachers and few resources, the children are not receiving the attention they need with many leaving education. This lack of preparation for secondary school and further education for those children who do continue studying is causing further desertion from the classroom. With many jobs requiring at least secondary education these students cannot enter the formal workplace.

Solution

Thanks to donations we can provide essential classroom resources for primary school and scholarships for secondary school and college. We can bring in local teachers to help out in understaffed schools and undertake critical maintenance and introduce sustainable food programmes. By providing access to a full education the students have more chance to gain employment afterwards.

Long-Term Impact

Improving education from the start with more resources in primary school classrooms means that more children are academically prepared for secondary school and college and therefore having a better chance to secure formal employment and income for their families. The rural communities can grow economically with better healthcare and further education for generations to come coupled with the family sustainable income plans we are introducing.
