Shanti Education Initiative (SEI) Nepal mobilizes national and international volunteers in different public schools of Nepal to assist them to create English Speaking environment and promote extra-curricular activities for quality education. Mobilization of volunteer for teaching English Program in Nepal is an enjoyable and satisfying experience where the volunteers get an opportunity to teach the students who are eager to improve their conversational English skills. Besides, they also support in other school activities such as sports and other extra-curricular projects.

As part of our Volunteer Mobilization Program, recently we placed Samikshya Shiwakoti, a student of Agnes Scott College, Georgia, and USA in Shringery Community Secondary School. She conducted different extra-curricular activities, taught about creative arts, etc. to the students of different grades.

Her experience in her own words:

I was assigned to work as a volunteer at Shringery Community Secondary School located at Lamatar village in Lalitpur Nepal. For the first two weeks I engaged them in games, singing, dancing and other activities. Most of my time was spent on giving dance lessons. This not only helped me to connect with the students but also with the school staffs and their parents.

During my stay, I also organized financial literacy workshops for the children and distributed storybooks to the students of grade six to ten. I organized essay and drawing competitions to test their knowledge on aspects of saving money and utilizing it in a prudent manner. The children really enjoyed the competitions as they were able to use their creativity and imagination. During the finals days of my internship, I showed them five episodes of ‘MeriBassai’ to the children as well as teachers that highlighted the importance of financial literacy in an entertaining manner. Beside these, the group participated in the discussions of economy with lots of enthusiasm. I was also able to make a donation of $500 for library setup.

On the last day of my stay, the children organized a farewell program for me and performed songs and dances. The school administration as well as the students and teachers were all very thankful for my service and were extremely grateful for the financial contribution. I also received many gifts from my students which included handmade items made with a lot of time and effort. As the children bid me farewell with eyes full of tears, I realized that I had been able to make a place in their hearts and I would miss them very much. Being a part of the process in my own small way by helping young children at the school has given me a great opportunity to provide service to my countrymen and make memories that I will cherish forever.

Thank you all for your kind support.
