Educational Sponsorship for 120 Children - India

Every year we acknowledge efforts of all sponsored students passed in 10^th and 12^th in a Felicitation Program. This year, 25 students in 12^th and 30 students in 10^th were invited to be a part of celebration of their success in Std. 10^th & 12^th. 15 students in 10^th and 4 students in 12^th scored more than 70%. We took this opportunity to have a dialogue with them on how they want to shape up their career and plan for future. Dr. Shruti Panse, an educationist facilitated the session on ‘Multiple Intelligences’. Children could test their likes and dislikes and see its linkages to career decisions. 90 children were present for this program and liked the session very much as it was the right time to plan ahead. Children also presented dance performances during the program. 

All these children have been struggling against the odds with the only wish to study further. According to our observation, most of the students find difficulties in Mathematics. Therefore, this year our focus is on providing them support in Mathematics. We facilitate coaching in Mathematics in our office. In spite of our efforts, some of them fail or drop out due to various reasons. For such children, we conduct vocational training program to provide them employment opportunity. This year, we took some of the drop out children in 3 communities for the visit to ICICI Academy for Skills where they offer vocational courses such as Office Administration, Sales Skills etc. Some of them have already enrolled for the course as the placement is guaranteed immediately after completion of the course.

Pooja is under IDEA’s sponsorship program from past 4 years. She comes from a very conservative community in which girls rarely get a chance to study after Std. 5^th or 6^th. Most of the girls in her community get married before attaining 18 years. We have been continuously conducting awareness programs and talking to the parents so that girls could act freely and explore opportunities for their development. There is a long way to go in this direction. But Pooja, one of the bright girls in that community has dared to step in the college. She is studying in 12^th inspiring other girls to follow her path.
