JUNA was born in the remote Humla region of Nepal. Empowering Women of Nepal organized training in Humla for General Cooking for Ecotourism on 2006. Her father, who also joined that training, runs a local teashop along the way to Mt. Kailash. She has 11 brothers and sisters, all of whom depend upon agriculture to survive. They have to work very hard in the field for one meal a day and make no additional income. Due to the financial problems of her large family, Juna had to leave school after grade 5 at nine years old to work in the field to support her family.
Her family wanted her to study further but due to their financial situation, this was not possible. Fortunately, they were able to send her in Empowering Women of Nepal-EWN for her further studies and better life. She is one of the EWN’s Girls Education Scholarship recipients. After grade 10 Juna continued to work as a trekking assistant for a year and currently she is doing internship at Manipal Teaching Hospital, in Pokhara to become a laboratory technician. She chose the laboratory course and joined Pokhara Technical Training and Research Centre. Now she feel confident that she can get a better paying and more fulfilling job as an adult. Juna says, “I hope all girls of Nepal have the opportunity to attend schools and fulfill their dreams. Sometimes life is not easy for girls, but we should stay strong and focus. We should take advantage of all life’s opportunities and work hard.”
